Reformation committee constituted to save the image of ABADU
The Abassakom Area Development Union,
ABADU, which is the umbrella development union covering all villages in the
Fundong municipality created in the 1980s to carter for the socio-cultural and
economic development of the population has lately been failing in its task, to
be that pulling force that unites Abassakom sons and daughters towards the
struggle for self-reliant development.
The
present leadership of the union seems to be suffering from a crisis and some
members of the present executive have even attested to the fact that if things
were to remain the same as they are now, ABADU in the nearest future will only
exist as a name. That is why the delegates meeting that held in Fundong on the
27th of December 2014 prior to the 2014 congress saw the
constitution of a reformation committee of seven members headed by Mr. Kiyong
Simon of the Bamenda branch to help revamp the union and save its image in the
face of an eventual collapse. For over the years, the leadership of ABADU
through the various presidents voted into office has shown proof of some kind
of vision for the union, but the present dispensation has been failing such
that a majority of the population no longer see the need even to turn out for
the development congresses organised every 28th of December each
year.
As a matter of fact, the union has stood on
just one project for more than 10 years now being the multipurpose hall project
and this best explains why so many people are becoming fade up and are now
focusing on their various village development associations to raise funds and
take care of their most pressing needs, rather than continue to contribute for
the same project each year. Not even scholarships promised to underprivileged
children in Abassakom have ever come to fruition.
The yearly congresses have not only
registered a significant drop in attendance but have also witnessed a decrease
in the amounts contributed for development projects. The 2014 congress of ABADU
on the 28th of December had less than 150 persons in attendance and
this was a strong signal that the future of ABADU remains uncertain if
something is not done and fast to redress the poor nature in information is
communicated to the public and also on how accountability is carried out in the
union. Raising 2.6MFCFA for an ABADU congress as opposed to higher sums over
the years was clear indication that something needs to be done and fast enough
to rescue an already bad situation.
Some of the executive members of ABADU who
talked to Boyo Eye said they feel very uncomfortable working with the present
leadership of the union because of the so many shortcomings manifested at the
level of the union’s presidency. It is very obvious that the Kiyong Simon led
reformation committee has to go to work immediately if at all ABADU wants any
positive results for the future.
